EU Moves to Toughen Trade-Defense Tools Against China

European leaders have asked the European Commission to develop stronger trade-defense tools to counter China's state-backed industrial overcapacity, subsidies, and economic coercion.

The European Union is moving toward a significantly tougher stance on China, according to reports. European leaders have formally requested that the European Commission develop enhanced trade-defense instruments.

The move is aimed at countering what the EU perceives as China's state-backed industrial overcapacity, unfair subsidies, and economic coercion. The request signals a growing consensus within the bloc to adopt a more assertive posture in trade relations with Beijing.
