United Airlines CEO Sees Full Consolidation Unlikely, Eyes Slot Acquisitions

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said full industry consolidation is improbable, though the carrier may buy slots or gates. He noted strong demand but expected elasticity effects, and that pricing is nearly offsetting higher fuel costs.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby stated that full consolidation in the airline industry is unlikely, but the carrier could pursue acquisitions of slots or gates at congested airports.

Kirby said that current pricing nearly offsets higher fuel costs, while demand remains strong although elasticity effects are anticipated. He also described fuel hedging as ineffective and noted that JetBlue is not close to filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The comments came during an investor event and reflect United's cautious outlook on industry structure and cost management.
