UN Chief Urges Accelerated Global AI Regulation

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for faster global AI regulation, warning that technology outpaces institutional oversight. He proposed protecting children from chatbot risks, banning lethal autonomous weapons, and expanding developing nations' access to computing resources.

Speaking at the first Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged accelerated global regulation of artificial intelligence. He warned that the technology is advancing faster than institutions and developers can keep up.

"We cannot vibe-code the truth. We cannot vibe-code the future of humanity," Guterres said. He proposed measures to protect children from chatbot risks, ban lethal autonomous weapons systems, and improve developing countries' access to computing resources.

Guterres also cautioned that modern AI systems already write code, act online, and make decisions with diminishing human oversight.
