Open Models Challenge Economics of AI Boom

A new tremor in AI comes not from lost investor faith but from a tougher question: how will the economics of the boom hold up as capable models become cheaper, lighter, and easier to use?

The latest shock to the artificial intelligence sector was not triggered by investors losing confidence in the technology. Instead, it stems from an uncomfortable question about the sustainability of the boom.

As open and more efficient models emerge, the economics that underpinned the AI surge are being tested. Cheaper, lighter, and more accessible models could disrupt the revenue assumptions of major players who have bet heavily on proprietary, capital-intensive AI systems.
