Foreign Holdings of US Treasuries Rise $18B in May to Near Record

Total foreign holdings of US Treasuries increased by $18 billion in May to $9.37 trillion, the second-highest on record. Over the past year, holdings surged by $549 billion.

Foreign holdings of US Treasuries rose by $18 billion in May, reaching $9.37 trillion—the second-highest level ever recorded. Over the trailing 12 months, total foreign holdings have climbed by $549 billion.

Among the top holders, Japan reduced its position by $67 billion to $1.14 trillion, the lowest since May 2025. The UK increased holdings by $11 billion to a record $949 billion, while China added $8 billion, bringing its total to $659 billion, the highest since February.

The seven largest financial centers collectively boosted their Treasury holdings by $33 billion, reaching an all-time high of $3.24 trillion. The data indicates sustained demand for US government debt.
