EU Prolongs Temporary Message Scanning for Child Abuse Detection

European Union countries have agreed to extend a temporary regime for scanning messages to identify users suspected of sharing child sexual abuse material, with the Cyprus presidency pushing the updated initiative.

EU member states have reached an agreement to prolong a temporary message-scanning regime designed to flag social media users involved in the dissemination of child sexual abuse material. The updated initiative is being championed by the current Cyprus presidency of the Council of the EU.

The move comes despite the European Parliament having voted against extending the temporary scheme in March. The Cyprus presidency is now urging EU countries to move to a first reading of the bill on June 29.

A group of activists under the banner "Fight Chat Control" has called on users to file complaints with MEPs and permanent representations of EU member states, characterizing the effort as an attempt to push mass surveillance on citizens.
