Belgian PM: NATO Article 5 Covers Defense Only, Not Offensive Actions

Belgian Prime Minister De Wever stated that NATO's Article 5 obliges allies to defend each other if attacked, but does not require participation in unilateral offensive actions by one member, warning such expectations are not in NATO's spirit.

Belgian Prime Minister De Wever commented on NATO’s Article 5 in the context of Iran, clarifying its scope. According to sources, he emphasized that the article requires allies to come to the defense of a member state if attacked, but it does not compel partners to join in unilateral offensive operations initiated by a single member.

De Wever cautioned that expecting such participation would run counter to the spirit of the NATO alliance. The remarks highlight ongoing tensions within the alliance regarding collective defense commitments versus individual military actions.
