AI-Linked Sectors Lose 11,000 Jobs Monthly Over Past 3 Months
Employment in AI-affected sectors has declined by an average of 11,000 jobs per month over the last three months, with May seeing a record 38,579 job cuts attributed to AI, according to Challenger Gray data.
Employment in sectors most impacted by artificial intelligence is contracting sharply. Over the past three months, these industries—including management consulting, graphic design, office administration, call centers, computer systems, software publishing, and web search—have posted an average monthly decline of 11,000 jobs.
Since mid-2023, only two months have seen a net increase in employment in these fields. This marks a dramatic reversal from the 2022 peak, when monthly job gains reached as high as +55,000.
In May alone, employers cited AI as the reason for 38,579 job cuts, the highest monthly total on record according to Challenger Gray data. That marks the third consecutive monthly increase, up from roughly 5,000 cuts in February. The data highlights a growing tangible impact of AI on the labor market.
