AI Chiefs Urge US Law for Synthetic DNA Screening

The heads of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Microsoft AI have signed an open letter urging the US to legally require synthetic DNA and RNA providers to screen orders and verify client identities.
The letter argues that rapid advances in artificial intelligence are lowering “knowledge barriers,” potentially enabling bad actors to use AI to design dangerous pathogens or toxins that circumvent previous constraints.
The proposed legislation would force suppliers of synthetic nucleic acids to screen all orders, implement customer identity checks, and maintain oversight of the equipment used in synthesis.
