The share of the top 50 cryptocurrencies by market cap that gained more than Bitcoin over the last 90 days. Stablecoins, wrapped and staked tokens and tokenised assets are left out, because they do not trade as altcoins. A reading of 75 or more is altcoin season, 25 or less is Bitcoin season. Recalculated once a day.

How the index is calculated
Take the top 50 coins by market capitalisation, excluding Bitcoin. For each, compare today's price with the price 90 days ago, and do the same for Bitcoin. The index is the percentage of coins whose 90-day return beat Bitcoin's.
Ranking comes from CoinGecko. Before taking the top 50, we drop CoinGecko's stablecoins, wrapped, bridged, liquid staking and restaking tokens and tokenised assets (treasuries, funds, gold). Exchange tokens such as BNB stay in: they trade freely.
Prices are Binance daily candles against USDT. If a coin is not on Binance, or the Binance ticker belongs to a different coin (today's price off CoinGecko's by more than 5%), the price comes from CoinGecko instead. A coin that is younger than 90 days is not counted, and the index is not published when fewer than 25 coins have a full window.
75 or more: altcoin season. 25 or less: Bitcoin season. In between, neither side leads.
What is altcoin season?
A stretch when most large altcoins outperform Bitcoin. The usual test is the one used here: at least three quarters of the top coins beating Bitcoin over 90 days.
Why 90 days?
It is long enough to ignore a single week's rotation and short enough to catch a season while it is happening. It is also the window most other altseason indexes use, so the numbers are comparable.
Why does this number differ from other altseason indexes?
Other sites use different universes (top 50 or top 100), different exclusion lists and different price sources. Our list of exclusions follows CoinGecko categories, so new stablecoins and tokenised funds drop out automatically.
