Will Revolut Launch a Stablecoin? What It Could Mean for…

Revolut has been selected by the UK's FCA to test a GBP-denominated stablecoin in its regulatory sandbox, while its stablecoin payment volumes surged 156% to $10.5 billion in 2025.
Revolut is moving closer to issuing its own stablecoin after being selected in February 2026 by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for a regulatory sandbox focused on stablecoins. The fintech giant, which also reported $6 billion in revenue for 2025, is testing a GBP-denominated stablecoin backed by pound reserve assets, available for use within its platform and on public blockchain networks.
The FCA chose Revolut from 20 applicants to join a cohort that also includes Monee Financial Technologies, ReStabilise, and VVTX. Testing began in Q1 2026, and the results will help shape the UK's final stablecoin rules, expected later that year. The FCA's Matthew Long, director of payments and digital assets, said the sandbox aims to ensure stablecoins can be trusted for payments, settlement, and trading.
Revolut's existing stablecoin payment volumes have already seen rapid growth. Crypto researcher Alex Obchakevich, using Dune Analytics data, estimated that Revolut processed roughly $10.5 billion in stablecoin payments during 2025, a 156% year-over-year increase. Monthly volumes hit a record $1.2 billion in December 2025. Notably, 30% to 40% of transactions ranged between $100 and $500, indicating use for everyday purchases rather than just large transfers.
The company is also pursuing a US banking license. Revolut US CEO Cetin Duransoy confirmed in June 2026 that the planned US bank will include stablecoin access alongside FDIC-insured accounts. Revolut filed for a de novo national bank charter in March 2026, with a consumer launch expected in 2027.
Revolut's financial position supports these ambitions. The firm reported $6 billion in revenue for 2025 (up from $4 billion), with pre-tax profit rising 57% to $2.3 billion. Its wealth division, which includes the Revolut X crypto exchange, saw revenue jump 298% to $647 million in December 2024. The company holds a full UK banking license (secured in March 2026 after a five-year wait), an EU banking license, and is now seeking a US charter.
Bloomberg Intelligence projects stablecoin payment flows could grow at an 81% compound annual rate to $56.6 trillion by 2030. Revolut's sandbox participation gives it a regulatory head start, and the data collected from its existing payment flows will directly inform UK stablecoin rules.
