Kraken Launches Mastercard Crypto Debit Card in UK and Europe

Kraken launched a Mastercard debit card in the UK and European Economic Area, letting users spend directly from crypto and cash balances with near-instant conversion and up to 2% cashback.

Kraken has expanded beyond trading and custody with the launch of a Mastercard-branded debit card in the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area (EEA). The product allows users to spend directly from more than 600 supported crypto and cash currency balances, with funds converted into local currency in near real time at the point of sale. The design eliminates the need for customers to manually sell assets or transfer funds to a separate bank account before making purchases.

The card offers up to 2% cashback on purchases, paid weekly in bitcoin, euros, or pounds. Kraken also stated that there are no transaction fees or ATM withdrawal charges, a feature intended to make the card competitive against both traditional debit products and other crypto-linked cards. The card is issued by Monavate, which is authorized by the UK Financial Conduct Authority for the UK market, and by UAB Monavate, authorized by the Bank of Lithuania, for the EEA.

Payments as Part of a Unified Platform

The rollout aligns with Kraken's strategy to turn its exchange into a broader financial hub. Kamo Asatryan, global head of consumer at Kraken and chief AI and data officer of parent company Payward, said that customers already use Kraken to earn, save, invest, and trade. "The Kraken Card adds 'spend' to that list, bringing it all together into one experience that just works," he commented.

The card launch follows Payward's agreement to acquire Reap Technologies for $600 million, a firm specializing in stablecoin-based card issuing and payment infrastructure. That acquisition signals Kraken's ambition to support not just consumer spending but also stablecoin settlement, cross-border payments, and business-focused crypto-linked services.

Operational and Competitive Context

For crypto exchanges, debit cards introduce operational complexity, including reliable conversion, transaction monitoring, and coordination with card networks and regulators. Kraken's UK and EEA launch tests whether the platform can handle regulated payment activity at scale while giving the company deeper insight into user spending patterns and crypto-to-fiat conversion demand.

The move reflects a broader industry push to make digital assets usable in everyday transactions, with card networks and fintech infrastructure providers increasingly bridging crypto balances with traditional payment rails. Kraken's card is among the most direct efforts to determine whether users will treat crypto holdings as practical spending accounts rather than purely as investment portfolios.
