GMO Coin to List Gold/Silver/Platinum-Linked Zipangcoin (ZPG) Series

GMO Coin, a subsidiary of the GMO Internet Group and registered crypto exchange in Japan, announced on Monday that it will begin offering three new cryptocurrencies pegged to precious metals: Zipangcoin (ZPG), Zipangcoin Silver (ZPGAG), and Zipangcoin Platinum (ZPGPT). Trading will commence on April 20, 2026, starting at 12:00 JST, through the exchange's spot marketplace, recurring purchase plan, and basic lending service.

The tokens are issued by Mitsui Bussan Digital Commodities and are designed to track the spot price of gold, silver, and platinum, respectively, with each token representing one gram of the corresponding metal in yen terms. GMO Coin says the tokens provide an inflation-hedge similar to physical precious metals, offering an alternative for investors seeking exposure to commodities with crypto convenience.

Unlike traditional commodity ETFs, Zipangcoin tokens incur no management or trust fees, making long-term holding more cost-effective. The exchange also highlights that users can earn lending rewards by participating in its “Crypto Lending Basic” program, generating income from the tokens—a feature not available with physical metals.

The minimum tradable amount is set at 0.001 ZPG for the gold token, 0.1 ZPGAG for silver, and 0.001 ZPGPT for platinum, allowing entry with less than 100 yen. Notably, the series runs on Ethereum's Layer-2 network Optimism (OP Mainnet), marking what the exchange claims is the first domestic adoption of a public-chain commodity token. However, deposits and withdrawals are currently restricted to whitelist-approved addresses, and direct transfers to other Japanese exchanges that do not support OP Mainnet are not possible.

The launch brings GMO Coin’s total listed crypto assets to 26, adding to its existing roster that includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and XRP among others.
