Gate sees $207M net outflows in 7 days after user theft incident

Gate.io saw $207 million in net withdrawals over seven days after a verified user alleged $1.7 million was stolen from their account, sparking a crisis of confidence.

Crypto exchange Gate.io has recorded $207 million in net outflows over the past seven days, following a high-profile user theft allegation that spread rapidly across social media. The incident has triggered a sustained withdrawal wave, with funds leaving the platform consistently rather than in a single panic.

The controversy began when a verified Gate.io user, posting under the handle @jheioff on X, claimed that $1.7 million had been drained from their account despite having all security measures enabled, including real-name verification, two-factor authentication, and email notifications. The user alleged that unauthorized changes to their security settings allowed the theft.

Gate.io initially pushed back, stating that the account actions appeared to be user-initiated and that no systemic breach had occurred. CEO Dr. Han publicly said the situation was fully disclosed and customer assets faced no systemic risk. However, widespread criticism on X and other platforms followed, with users questioning the exchange's security architecture and whether Gate.io would take financial responsibility for the loss. Under mounting pressure, the exchange reversed course, issued an apology, and committed to a full investigation. As of the latest reports, the $1.7 million has not been returned to the affected user.

The $207 million in net outflows over seven days reflects a slow erosion of trust. This pattern is not new for Gate.io. In 2023, the exchange saw withdrawal spikes ranging from $148 million to $176 million, triggered by unconfirmed rumors. The current incident mirrors that history but includes a verified user with a specific dollar figure attached. Additionally, Gate.io has faced past scrutiny over a purported 2018 incident that some analysts linked to roughly $230 million in losses that were never publicly disclosed. The exchange has not confirmed that characterization, but the narrative resurfaces whenever security headlines emerge.

The sustained nature of the outflows—seven days of net withdrawals rather than a single-day spike—suggests deeper concern among users. For traders still holding funds on Gate.io, the investigation timeline is critical. If the exchange provides a transparent account of what happened and offers restitution, it may recover. If the inquiry goes quiet, the $207 million outflow figure may grow.
