Coincheck Introduces JPKI Identity Verification for Crypto Asset Transfers

Coincheck has introduced additional identity verification using Japan's My Number Card-based JPKI system for certain cryptocurrency transfers, claiming a domestic first in an effort to combat fraud and account takeovers.
Coincheck, the Japanese crypto exchange claiming the largest active user base and app downloads domestically, announced on June 19, 2026, that it has begun requiring additional identity verification via the Japanese Public Key Infrastructure (JPKI) for certain crypto transfer transactions. The move is described as the first such application of JPKI for crypto transfers in Japan.
JPKI leverages the digital certificates embedded in My Number Card IC chips to authenticate individuals online. Coincheck will now require some retail customers who meet specific criteria to complete this verification before a crypto transfer can be processed. If the verification fails, the transfer is blocked.
According to the company, the measure responds to increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes including social engineering, phishing, and malware-driven account takeovers that threaten customer assets. Coincheck states that by strengthening identity checks at the point of asset withdrawal, it aims to further prevent unauthorized transfers.
The process works by scanning the My Number Card with a smartphone. Customers who do not possess the card can contact Coincheck to arrange an alternative verification method. The company warns that depending on application content and verification status, completion may take time.
Broader security push
Coincheck also highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade authentication across the platform. It is expanding the use of passkey authentication for login, crypto transfers, and yen withdrawals, and plans to gradually make it mandatory for multiple actions. The exchange says it will continue to enhance both identity verification and authentication mechanisms to provide a safer trading environment.
Coincheck is operated by Coincheck, Inc., a subsidiary of Monex Group (listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market) and Coincheck Group N.V. (listed on Nasdaq). The company is registered as a crypto asset exchange service provider with the Kanto Local Finance Bureau.
