Coinbase Derivatives hits $4.75B daily volume after Deribit integration

Coinbase Derivatives hit $4.75 billion in combined daily trading volume on July 11, driven by the integration with Deribit, which contributed $1.1-$1.8 billion in daily volume.

Coinbase Derivatives achieved a combined daily trading volume of $4.75 billion on July 11 following its integration with crypto options exchange Deribit, marking a significant milestone in the firm's expansion into institutional derivatives.

During the July 10-13 period, Deribit contributed between $1.1 billion and $1.8 billion in daily trading volume, while Coinbase Derivatives added between $380 million and $500 million on top of that. Deribit also accounted for roughly 95% of the combined open interest, with its position totaling between $27.4 billion and $27.8 billion. The total combined open interest stood at approximately $28.9 billion, signaling strong institutional confidence.

Before the acquisition, Coinbase operated a relatively modest derivatives business focused primarily on US-regulated products. Deribit, which Coinbase acquired, had established itself as the dominant player in crypto options, historically processing over $1 trillion in annual volume. The integration now gives Coinbase a comprehensive derivatives offering that includes perpetuals, dated futures, and options on major assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.

For institutional investors, the combined platform's scale reduces two key barriers to crypto derivatives adoption: counterparty risk and liquidity fragmentation. Consolidating liquidity in a single venue lowers execution slippage and mitigates exposure to multiple counterparties. The $28.9 billion open interest is seen as a measure of reduced friction for large traders.

Derivatives trading typically generates higher fee revenue per dollar of volume compared to spot trading, making the integration strategically important for Coinbase's revenue mix. The platform now offers a vertically integrated derivatives operation that no other US-headquartered exchange previously possessed.
